Elderly Exemption and Veteran's Credit

The deadline for Elderly Exemption and Veteran's Credit Applications is April 15 for any property owner applying for the first time.  The allowed exemption and/or credit is then applied to the current year's tax bill.  Residents receiving these benefits DO NOT NEED to apply each year.  Elderly residents are encouraged to contact us when a birthday would allow for an increase in the exemption amount (see guidelines below).

General guidelines for Elderly Exemption: applicants must be 65 by April 1 and must have resided in New Hampshire for at least three consecutive years preceding April 1. The property must be the principal residence, owned by either the applicant or the applicant's spouse, and the couple must be married for at least five years. The Elderly Exemption income and asset limitations are as follows: Single $40,000; Married $55,000. Assets are limited to $175,000 (The principal residence is NOT included in the asset listing). Exemptions for taxpayers vary by age: for a person aged 65-74:  $120,000; for a person aged 75-79: $160,000; and for a person 80 years of age or older: $200,000.

General guidelines for Veteran's Credit: applicants must have resided in New Hampshire for at least one year preceding April 1. Applicants must have owned the property as of April 1, and served at least 90 days in the armed forces for the United States in a qualifying war or armed conflict as defined by the State and was honorably discharged or separated from service. For conflicts occurring since May 8, 1975 Veterans must have earned an armed forces expeditionary medal or a "theater of operations service medal" or been issued an "award" as clarified by the State denoting combat service. The spouse or un-remarried surviving spouse of such a resident also qualifies for the $500 credit. A resident who was terminated from the armed forces because of a total and permanent service-connected disability or the un-remarried surviving spouse of that resident qualifies for the additional $2,000 credit. Lastly, the un-remarried surviving spouse of any resident who suffered a service-connected death may apply for the Surviving Spouse Veteran's Credit of $1,400.
